Traditional Stone Buildings

Traditional stone and solid-wall buildings are built very differently from modern cavity-wall construction. They rely on moisture moving through the wall and evaporating at the surface. A hard, impermeable cement render traps that moisture inside the wall, leading to damp, decay and failure. Lime allows the building to breathe.

Why Breathability Matters

Moisture enters solid walls from outside (rain) and inside (cooking, breathing, drying clothes). In a breathable wall, that moisture passes through and evaporates. Seal it with cement and the moisture has nowhere to go — it builds up, freezes in winter, blows the render, and rots timbers. Breathability isn't a luxury feature; it's how these buildings were designed to work.

Lime Versus Cement

The correct system depends on the original building construction. Cement is right for modern cavity walls designed to keep water out. Lime is right for solid walls designed to let moisture through. Using the wrong one doesn't just look wrong — it actively damages older buildings. We specify based on how your wall is actually built.

Internal Lime Plastering

Internal lime plaster suits traditional stone houses, old cottages, farmhouses, period properties and renovations. It keeps internal walls breathable, regulates humidity and gives a soft, warm, characterful finish that modern gypsum can't match.

External Lime Rendering

Complete traditional lime systems for external walls — built up in coats suited to the substrate and exposure, finished with a lime wash or breathable paint. Genuine project examples across Mayo.
